Another small business start up

Well there's nothing like a little sibling rivalry to boost a couple of bank accounts! With Jenna's business moving forward, Kendra was deep in thought about what she could do to begin making some extra cash. This one didn't just want to make some money, she wanted to use her talents and have some fun while doing it. So she came up with a pre-babysitting service. She put together some fliers advertising her service of caring for and playing with children while busy parents get some much needed uninterrupted work done around the house. Our neighborhood is bursting with kids ages 5 and below so there was a great response. Her first job was Sunday. A girl down the street was turning 5 and having a "spa" birthday party. Kendra's job was to help the guests paint their nails, create crafts and help with the games. She had a blast, got rave reviews from all of the neighborhood mothers and came home with $35 in her pocket.
We are so proud of her and thrilled that she's using her social butterfly skills to help pay for the lululemon jacket she so desperately wants!

Our newest entrepreneur...

This girl definitely has her Daddy's sense of business. Jenna has officially launched her new business, A Glass Act. Our neighborhood finally just began a curbside recycling program. However, they do not accept glass bottles. Jenna saw this as an opportunity. She put together some glass recycling bins and went door to door around our neighborhood offering to pick up their glass and take it to the recycling depot in Squamish for a $5 fee. So far she has 7 people on her customer list! She's got herself a little notebook to keep customer information in and has set up a template on the computer for billing. She's got her sights set on purchasing a Nintendo DS within 3 months.

We've got a winner!

Last November Kendra wrote a poem for Rememberance Day and entered it in a contest. She made it into the finals with this little writing of hers.
I got a call at work today from a very excited Kendra telling me she had won FIRST PRIZE!!! This came with a certificate, a ribbon and $50 cash! We're so proud of her and her creative abilities. So you can enjoy it to I've written it below...

We had a first tonight. I'm not quite sure what to think of it all....

Phone rings

Me: Hello

9 year old boy: (giggling) Is Kendra there?

I get Kendra, making sure I'm standing close enough that I can hear EVERY word...

Kendra: (pause) (In typical pre-teen drama voice!) Brett!!!! Oh my gosh, you are sooo stoooopid. Um, okay (hands phone to Jenna)

9 year old boy: Um, Brett loves you.

Jenna: Bye. (Hangs up the phone)

Mmmm Hmmmm. Oh dear. Here we go.....

Hot tub moments

Tonight I had one of those moments that for a mother keep you going and make all the frustrations of a busy life more than worth it. Kendra and I have established a fairly regular "hot tub chat". This has become our time to connect and a safe place for her to share what's going on in her life. Here's what I learned tonight...
She describes her family as the following...

Travis: adventurous and silly
Jenna: funny and awesome
Me: trustworthy and smart

Here's the best part...

"Mom, I know that you 'gave me' to Jesus when I was a baby. But I decided that I wanted to make my own choice. I decided last night for myself that I want to believe in Jesus."

Well my student teaching is now full swing ahead! I'm now teaching full time in a grade seven class. So far, so good. My biggest complaint is that these kids just simply will not stop chatting. Although, I seem to remember a girl in grade 7 that would routinely get sent out into the hall for chatting too much. I suppose it serves me right! Just wanted to give a heads up to my friends and family that haven't heard from me in awhile. I miss and love you all, but it just may be another 6 weeks before I resurface.

Up in the Arctic

They say that all Canadians live in igloos, so.....Travis met the girls at the door when they got home from school yesterday and told them of his plans to build. They dropped their backpacks at the door and headed out. Aside from about a half hour dinner break, they didn't come inside until just after 8:00. They didn't just dig around and build a wall. Oh no. This was a serious snow fort/igloo/shelter from all danger. I don't know if these pictures do it justice, but just know it's AMAZING!!!
